My Ten Favorite Books

My first thought when writing this list was, “Do I have to choose only ten books?”  I’m sure most avid readers will agree that it’s tough narrowing down hundreds of books you’ve read to only ten!  These aren’t in any particular order but are ten of my favorites.

The English Patient, by Michael Ondaatje

If I had to pick one favorite book, it would be this.  The writing is beautiful, and the story perfectly woven together.  Reading it made me want to see the world and write as descriptively as Ondaatje does. I first read The English Patient in high school, and it’s a book I could get lost in again and again.

Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen

This happens to be the first Jane Austen book I ever read, but it’s her best and my favorite.  I loved the story and especially the heroine, Elizabeth Bennett.  There’s a reason this story keeps getting told and retold all these years later.  It’s one of my favorite classics!

Confessions of a Shopaholic, by Sophie Kinsella

The first in the Shopaholic series, this book is hilarious.  Any fan of chick lit will love this story as Becky Bloomwood tries to navigate through her chaotic life.  I could list many of Sophie Kinsella’s books amongst my favorites, so I’m picking her first!

Something Borrowed, by Emily Giffin

Another one of my favorite chick lit authors, I enjoyed the twist of the storyline in this.  What would you do if the perfect guy for you happened to be engaged to your best friend?

Ender’s Game, by Orson Scott Card

I’m not normally a huge sci-fi fan or reader of the genre, but I loved this story of Ender and his quest to save the universe.

Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton

I love the science and story of Jurassic Park.  Reading it kept me on the edge of my seat, and this book made me want to believe that dinosaurs really could roam the earth again!

Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling

I love this series for the creativity.  Who doesn’t want to live in a world of wizards and muggles and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavored Beans?  I’ve been to the coffee shop in Edinburgh, Scotland where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter. I’m so amazed she came up with such a fantastic series right there!

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is another classic that I first read in high school and have read countless times since.  I love his writing style and have enjoyed many of his books.

Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn

Some people love it, some people hate it, but I loved that there were so many parts of the story I never saw coming!  It’s fun getting lost in a story, and this was one book I couldn’t wait to finish because I had to know how it ended.

The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver

Last but not least, I love the way this story is told. Each chapter is narrated from the perspective of a different character. I love many of Barbara Kingsolver’s books, but if I had to pick just one, this is my favorite.
